Hopefully you'll know about rock climbing prior, if not you have some serious work to do. You have to be experienced in the methods so acquire some professional help and get plenty of practice. You will need to know about belaying, abseiling, tying into the rope etc. There are numerous indoor climbing walls where you can teach yourself but for the best experience get some practice on some actual rocks. Rock climbing can be done by almost anyone so long as the person is in good physical condition. The most important thing about footwork while rock climbing is to use your toes, when every you rock climb it is best to do most of the climbing utilising your legs and keep the centre of gravity over your feet and push with the legs. Both your arms and hands are used only for balancing and positioning. However as the route of the climb becomes difficult, the climber will need a combination of arm, hand and finger strength and endurance to stick to the rock. Explorers started rock climbing when travelling through the Arctic waste and up the mountains. Then came the free climbers-daring individuals wooed on by the idea of tackling something so grand. The most individualistic sport out there has to be rock climbing. Climbing up ice or rock, every climber has a unique style. There seem to be countless ways to put finger to stone or crush some ice with an axe. Rock climbing is also team based. The life of a free climber is in the hands of their climbing partner. Equipment for rock climbing Helmet: Your head needs protection from bumps. Helmets can be bought for as little as thirty dollars. Harness: A harness will provide the support you need while climbing cliffs and crags. You can purchase one for as little as $30. Harnesses are very durable. They'll be by your side for many years. Climbing shoes: These are sometimes called approach shoes. Their distinctive attribute is a clip with a locking carabineer. You can pick one up for $80. Safety carbineer: This is needed to lock into your harness and rope. Rope: A definite requirement, although if you group climb, you could share amongst the group. If you're thinking or rock climbing it is for sure an activity that is very exciting. It's not something everyone can do, as it is a sport that is very demanding and not for the faint of heart. Climbing is just one activity; there's a diverse arena of climbing and some times a climb consists of two or more types of climbing. There is free soloing, sport, bouldering, traditional (or trad), aid, alpine, and ice climbing. Making yourself knowledgeable of these types of climbing will aid you in determining which you prefer and the climb type that's most suited for you.
